Not long ago, I came across a quote that really made me pause: "If you want to win the marathon, the universe hands you the running shoes, not the trophy." Those words have stayed with me, especially as I think back to the half marathon I ran ten years ago—the experience still feels close to my heart.
It’s such a beautiful reminder of how growth actually works. So often, we find ourselves drawn to the finish line—the trophy being hoisted, the medal gleaming, the big celebration. We see the "after" picture, the launched business, or the big smiles. But we don't always see the early mornings, the sleepless nights, the practice runs, or the quiet determination that happened when no one was watching.
We don't always see the worn-out soles of the shoes that carried them there.
I want to encourage you today to look at whatever "running shoes" life has handed you right now with gratitude. Maybe you’re in a season of building, learning, or bravely trying something new. It might not look like the trophy just yet, but this—this is the most important part. This is where you build strength, resilience, and character, and where the finish line becomes so much sweeter.
Let me share a little story from that half marathon I mentioned, because it’s a memory that beautifully weaves into this theme of perseverance and encouragement. Ten years ago, while training, I injured my knee. By race day, I almost didn’t finish—the pain was nearly unbearable. Just when I was about to give up, a sweet lady noticed that I was struggling. She gently put her arm around me and said, "We got this, and we’ll finish together." Her kindness carried me across that finish line. Sometimes, the journey is made possible by the beautiful people we meet along the way. Those moments of encouragement remind us that we never truly run alone.
Embracing the process means lacing up those shoes every day, even when the destination feels far away. It means trusting that every step you take is moving you forward, even the small ones. Especially the small ones!
Please remember: the work is a gift, not a burden. It’s the universe’s way of saying, "I believe you can do this, so here are the tools to get you there." You are capable of incredible things, and your journey is unique and beautiful.
So, if you’re in the middle of your marathon right now, keep going. Embrace the training. Love the journey. I see you, and I believe in you so much.
Use those running shoes to chase your wildest dreams. I am always rooting for you!
